QUINTANILLA 2ND OVERALL AFTER SEALINE RALLY STAGE 4

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Pablo Quintanilla wrapped up the penultimate stage of the Sealine Rally in Qatar on Thursday second overall to his main rival after a navigational error cost him valuable time. The Chilean rider however remained positive, saying anything can still happen before the finish line on Friday.

Quintanilla, charged with opening the stage as Wednesday’s winner, and over terrain that invites high speed competition, made the mistake at the beginning of the timed special of 354 km. It was an unfortunate and disappointing error, particularly as on Wednesday he shared the overall fastest time with British rider Sam Sunderland who now has the advantage.

Quintanilla:
“I missed a waypoint just 20km into the special in an area where there are many parallel tracks and where there were some changes in the course,” he commented. Faced with a confusion of many parallel tracks on the ground he lost valuable time relocating the waypoint and had lost about 20 minutes on the leader when he reached to refuelling stop, according to Team Coordinator Daniel Trauner. Quintanilla did refocus for the remainder of the stage and managed to claw back several minutes but he will want to ride a faultless stage on Friday to maintain his position.

Fortunately he also has a 10-minute advantage over third placed Helder Rodrigues and is still well placed for a podium finish when the rally wraps up on Friday. “Today did not go well, but anyway I’m second overall and tomorrow there are still 350 km to go and anything can happen,” he said.

Teammate and team rookie Pela Renet of France also had a day that was not without incident, and not without crashes. He was sixth at the finish of the stage and despite the incidents, he was still able to maintain the around five-minute gap between him and fourth placed Bolivian rider Juan Carlos Salvatierra in the overall standings.

With some good focus and another solid ride in the final round, Renet may catch Salvatierra and pick up some more championship points in this, the second round of the FIM Cross Country Rallies World Championship.

Renet:
“I’m not really happy how I started the stage but I did some pretty good things after the refuelling,” he commented after the stage.
