Tonkov Rocks Patagonia

Wilvo Standing Construct Yamaha Official MX rider Aleksandr Tonkov bounced back from a hectic first moto in Argentina on Sunday to finish on the MX2 podium at Villa La Angostura and rise to third overall in the World Championship.

Tonkov spent energy in the early race on Sunday chasing England’s Max Anstie on the loamy and dark dirt of Patagonia’s premiere motocross track, finally easing off in the middle laps to hold his third place from start to finish. In the late race the Russian rider again found himself behind Anstie, but quickly passed him and set his sights on a tight pack of riders chasing the podium spots. Midway through the late race Tonkov dropped one slot to fourth and struggled under a bright mountain sunshine until breaking through on his YZ250F to solidify his podium spot on the day.

Kemea Yamaha Official MX rider Benoit Paturel was less lucky in the first moto, colliding in his start to find himself chasing up through the pack until midrace when he settled in for 13th and found motivation for the second moto. Paturel fared much better in the afternoon, punching through the crowded forest along lake Nahuel Huapi to keep his back end loose over a tricky set of waves and finish 5th.

Wilvo Standing Construct Yamaha Official MX rider Alvin Östlund rode solidly in the first moto to finish 11th after a start that left the young Swedish champion outside the leaders, but crashed early in moto two and left the race with scrapes to his cheeks and face. Östlund was not injured and will start next week in Mexico at MXGP Leon.

With his 40 points at MXGP Argentina Aleksandr Tonkov moves to 3rd overall in the MX2 class with 131 points. Paturel now sits 6th with 99 points and Östlund rounds out Yamaha’s riders in 10th with 70 points.
