A red flag interrupted a bright start for Riccardo Russo and Florian Marino in the opening FIM Superstock 1000 Cup race of the 2016 season at Motorland Aragon this afternoon. The Pata Yamaha Official STK1000 pair eventually brought home a fourth and fifth place finish respectively after a shortened race at the Spanish circuit.

Unfazed by the earlier events, Russo took full advantage of the red flag and restart procedure as he fired off the line. Instantly fighting for the lead, the Italian battled repeatedly for the top two positions before running wide at turn 16 on lap three. Returning to the track in fifth, he continued his efforts to reel in the front group, collecting a fourth place finish and 13 points to start his championship challenge fourth in the standings.

Marino saw his dominant start in the opening race cut short by the red flag incident, forcing the Frenchman to return to pit lane and regroup ready for the restart. As the lights went out for the reduced eight lap dash, he again started well, running second for the opening revolution before a temporary issue while fighting for position with his teammate, saw him drop back to 10th. With fighting spirt Marino immediately began his come-back, regaining four positions by the half way stage and claiming fifth at the flag. His efforts rewarded with 11 points and a top-five position in 2016’s rider classification, his determination proves he is one of the class’s true contenders.

The Pata Yamaha Official STK1000 Team continues its season at Assen in a fortnight’s time as the World Championship paddock heads to The Netherlands on Sunday 17th April.
