The ‘P’ in Pol is for Passion

A popular guy with a big smile and a kind word to anyone he meets, that’s Pol Espargaró. The Spanish is a favourite amongst race fans for all the right reasons. We talked to him about his amazing achievement at the famous Suzuka 8 Hours on the YZF-R1, his gutsy performances on the YZR-M1 in MotoGP, and his amicable relationship with Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider team-mate Bradley Smith.

Last year was your rookie year, this year is your second year. How is that different in terms of hopes, expectations and pressure?

“Last year the pressure was a little bit lower. For sure it was a bit difficult to arrive to one track and be ready to understand how to approach the first session. In the first practice you would be happy just to recognise the track with the MotoGP bike and after FP2 it was the moment to push. This year I already knew all the tracks and I could use it to understand how to ride the bike and to prepare the settings, so I can arrive at Sunday’s race a bit more prepared than last year, but this year we are also struggling a little bit with some other problems, so we are more or less in the same place. In the end we are a bit slower in some races, while last year we were rookies. We’re struggling a little bit, but that’s OK, it just means we’re learning.”
